How Do You Identify What Drives You?

Every now and then comes a time in your life, or perhaps many times, that you get the urge to make a change.

You get to that point when how you’ve existed up til now just isn’t cutting it for you anymore.

You have a burning desire or need to make some serious changes that will improve some aspect of your life.

Perhaps you want to be fitter and healthier or improve your relationships. Maybe you want to update or increase your skill set so you can earn more money and have more freedom. Do you want to make better use of your time so you can do more of the things you love? Or maybe you just want to feel happier with your life overall!

Deciding to make a change is one thing, sticking to it though is quite something else.  Change involves you going against in ground habits, beliefs, thought processes and patterns that you have developed over a long period of time.

That’s why it is so important to fully understand what drives you.  What is it that drives you to make a change and what drives you to keep going and persisting to ensure that change becomes a permanent part of your life?

How do you identify what drives you?

It really comes down to knowing exactly what your personal values are.

Truly living your personal values is what makes life meaningful and fun! Living your personal values gives you a sense of purpose which is the key to creating a life full of success and happiness.

So what do you value?

It’s pretty easy I know to come up with a list of material things.  Fancy cars, big houses, massive wardrobes filled with clothes and shoes, luxurious holidays..

All so delightful, however it’s plain for all to see when we have a quick look among the rich and famous that money alone will not keep you happy in the long term scheme of things.

After a while having loads of money and material items becomes the norm and the initial excitement of all those shiny new things loses its power to excite you.

So what do you really value?

To help get some ideas going in your mind, let me give you a few things to ponder..

  • If you knew that the world was going to end in exactly one weeks’ time, what would you most want to do?
  • Transport yourself to the end of your days, what are the 3 most valuable lessons you have learned?
  • Think of a person that you truly and deeply respect, what qualities do they have that you admire the most?
  • When you are in your absolute top form, the place where you do your ‘best work’, how would you describe yourself, your characteristics and most desirable traits?
  • And finally, this one is slightly morbid I know, what would you like to see written on your tombstone?

The biggest change I have made in my life in the last 5 years is starting my own Business as an Online Marketer. There was a period of time that gradually lead me to making this big change in my life.

I’d had that old familiar feeling that I needed to make a change for quite some time. I wanted to expand my life to include new experiences and travel.

I had a strong desire to do more with my life, to feel like I was using my own personal talents to their full potential. I wanted to connect with more people, share ideas and help others. I wanted flexibility with my time to fit in all of the things that were important to me.

Originally I was looking to further my study. I knew I wanted to learn and improve my skill set however none of the courses that I found were really connecting with me. I considered furthering my Accounting studies, going back to Banking and Finance, I even considered HR. Nothing I looked at made me feel inspired about how it would impact the rest of my life.

My other big driver of course is my 12 year old daughter. My little treasure is bound for great success in her life, that I am sure of. She is a beautiful soul, caring, funny and intelligent.  I am extremely mindful of the fact that she studies my every move and learns a whole lot more from what I do than what I say.

Demonstrating to my daughter the values of living a successful life and following your passion, drives me to keep going like nothing else. I want her to see that it is possible to create a life that you love, doing what it is you’re passionate about and to be rewarded for what you can do as your own unique self that gives value to those around you.

When I found that a great friend of mine had started her own Online Business as an Affiliate Marketer, I had to find out more about it. I soon discovered that this was the exact platform that would bring together everything that I was looking for!

Having my own Business as an Online Marketer with the SFM and DEA gives me the opportunity to achieve everything that I value. I’m able to be creative and connect with people like you worldwide, and offer the opportunity, support and guidance for you to create a lifestyle and business that reflects your own passions and desires.  I absolutely love it!

The freedom of running my business from home means that I have the flexibility with my time to be more involved in my daughter’s life. It also means she gets to see exactly what it is that I do. I can even teach her skills that she can use in her own journey as she gets older.

So let me now tell you my answers to the questions I posed before..

If I knew the world was ending in a weeks’ time:

I would spend it with those that I love in a beautiful tropical paradise, making sure those people knew how much I loved them and how grateful I was to them for what they had brought to my life.

The 3 most valuable lessons that I will know I have learned when I’m on my death bed are:

  1. How important it is to live life to its fullest and treat life as an adventure.
  2. Learn to speak your own truth and express how you feel openly and honestly.
  3. Always aim to help others in whatever way you can.

The people I admire most have these common qualities:

  • They are completely honest about who they are and don’t try to be perfect.
  • They have a desire to make other people feel good and so are giving with their energy.
  • They follow their passions and create a life doing what they love.
  • They are quick witted, funny and laugh, a lot.

When I’m in top form and doing some of my ‘best work’:

  • I am warm, caring, a great listener and capable of having really meaningful conversations. People open up to me.
  • I’m driven and full of positive energy.
  • I’m light hearted, funny and in tune with everything that is going on around me.

And one day, far far from now, this is what will be written on my tombstone:

Fantastic piece of life decisions that we must look deep within ourselves of what our purpose is and what we want. Making money and owning an online business is a lot more than a journey of making money. A journey of the heart and soul……brilliant post, I really enjoyed it and take away some great personal values to share.

Thank you Nik, I’m glad you enjoyed the read! So true, it’s not just the money. Money is what follows you when you do what you love and what you’re passionate about. It comes from the value you give to others. That’s what makes it so rewarding 🙂

Thank you very much Toni for this blog as it has made me want to have another look at my values. It has also given me a blog post idea for my own website.

  • Great blog Toni…. and yes not everything is all about being rich with money and assets…. it’s about being rich with love, happiness, health, friendship and family… and then wealth. Because without those other things the money is pointless! Thanks for sharing 🙂
