You may have heard this before, ‘Stop focusing on the negatives, start focusing on the positives..’
There is actually some science behind this to back it up.
Every day we are bombarded with somewhere between 2-12 million bps of information. As humans we can only process around 134bps.
So what happens to the rest of the information?
Our minds have a wonderful filtering system that sorts through all the information to distort, delete and generalize what we receive leaving us with our own unique perception of each experience.
Part of this filtering system is the Reticular Activating System (RAS) that filters according to what is forefront in our mind meaning whatever you’re focusing on the most it will seek out more of the same to present to you.
Knowing this system is in place means we can utilize it to the best of our ability to assist in achieving our desired outcomes.
Have you ever made a vision board? Keeping images of what you desire in your life in a place you will often look works with the RAS in keeping your thoughts and feelings focused on what it is you want to achieve. Setting both short and long term goals that you regularly read and update also works with your RAS by keeping these thoughts forefront in your mind to recognize opportunities and make decisions as they come up that will lead you to achieve what it is that you most desire.
On the flip side, keeping your thoughts on what you don’t want to achieve or don’t want to have in your life anymore also has the effect of working with your RAS to find more of what you don’t want or are trying to move away from.
With facts like that at hand it is definitely good motivation to focus my thoughts on what I DO want to have in my life rather than what I don’t want.
